Meet the Team Behind TruVest




Roy Firth

Founder & President


Roy Firth founded TruVest Capital Limited in 2013 to explore opportunities in Financial Services Distribution as well as Sports Management and various other innovative early stage businesses.

Mr. Firth retired from Manulife Financial in March 2013 as Executive Vice President, Banking, Distribution and Private Client Services, Canadian Division, and Chairman of Manulife Securities and Manulife Assets Management Limited. He was responsible for the distribution of Manulife's individual retail products in Canada and oversaw the high priority areas of Manulife Securities, Manulife Bank, Capital Markets and Private Client Services.

Prior to July 2012, Mr. Firth led the Individual Wealth Management business unit for 12 years- an era of exceptional growth highlighted by innovative new product development, significant expansion of distribution capabilities, and a more than four-fold increase in earnings. During this period, assets increased from roughly $30 billion to over $100 billion.

He joined Manulife in 1998 as President of Elliott & Page Limited, the Asset Management arm of Manulife. Prior to joining Elliott & Page, he spent 10 years at Laurentian Bank of Canada, latterly in position of Executive Vice-President, Treasury, Risk Management and Strategic Development.

Mr. Firth continues to be Chairman of Manulife Asset Management Limited, one of Canada’s largest investment management firms.

Mr. Firth holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from Concordia University and a Masters of Business Administration degree in Finance and Marketing from Columbia University, New York.




Bob Tillmann

Chief Operating Officer, TruVest Capital Limited


Bob Tillmann is the COO of TruVest Capital Limited, a private equity firm he joined early in 2014 to explore and develop business opportunities, primarily focused in Financial Services Distribution.

Mr. Tillmann was previously at Manulife Financial where he was Vice President, Marketing and Sales Support Services, Canadian Division Distribution. He was responsible for the overall advisor experience with Manulife in Canada. Specific leadership responsibilities included marketing and online support, customer research and event management including oversight of the company’s sponsorship of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic in Waterloo, Ontario.

Prior to 2012, Mr. Tillmann was a Vice President in Manulife Investments and its predecessor organization, Individual Wealth Management in Canada. Over a ten year period, he successfully led various wealth management teams in marketing, product management, brand & business development and strategic planning. He joined Manulife in 2000 to lead the team responsible for the launch of Manulife’s popular and innovative Manulife One banking product.

Prior to joining Manulife, he was at TD Canada Trust / Canada Trust for 14 years in various executive roles in retail product management, distribution and corporate banking.

Mr. Tillmann holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Western University and a Masters of Business Administration from the Ivey Business School.




Alex Macdonald

Chief Investment Officer


Alex Macdonald is Chief Investment Officer of TruVest Capital Limited. He joined the firm in January of 2016.

Mr. Macdonald has almost 30 years of broad investment management experience, with a track record of delivering strong investment results and building collaborative and successful teams. He formerly was the Chief Investment Officer of OPTrust, a major public sector pension plan. Prior to OPTrust, he held the role of Executive Vice President, Canadian Investments and Global Investment Strategy with Manulife. He has also served as President of Laketon Investment Management and held a number of progressively senior roles with Canada Life.

Mr. Macdonald has served a number of non-profit organizations. This has included being a member of the Investment Committee of the United Church of Canada for 17 years where he was Asset Mix Chair for 10 years and overall Chair for a year. He also served as a director on the Stratford Chef School Board for 11 years where he served on the Finance and Audit sub-committee.

Mr. Macdonald holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Queen’s University at Kingston and a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder and holds the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and Professional Risk Manager (PRM) designations.




Norman Light

Advisor - Finance


Mr. Light applies his strong finance and strategic skills to the selective sourcing of private equity and private debt deals for wealthy investors, as President of Enlightened Private Capital Inc. He also provides financial advisory services to a number of private companies.

Previously, he was with Manulife Financial for seven years where he occupied several senior management positions in finance and investments, including SVP and Corporate Controller; SVP and CFO, Investments Division; and SVP Global Investment Management. He acted as a director of several companies, including Manulife Bank of Canada, Elliott & Page (mutual funds), Independence Investments, Declaration Management and Research, Hancock Natural Resource Group, and MFC Global Investment Management. Mr. Light was a member of Manulife’s Management Committee (top 28 globally).

Prior to Manulife, Mr. Light was an executive with Royal Bank of Canada for 17 years where he played a key role in strategic planning; mergers and acquisitions including Royal Trust, Richardson Greenshields, and insurance companies; assessed all major capital investments bank-wide; led key financial policy and financial strategy functions; and led the important consumer deposit business.

Mr. Light obtained an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School and a BComm., Summa Cum Laude, from Concordia University.




Steve Myers

Marketing & Sales Support


Steve Myers joined the team in 2014 to lead TruVest's marketing and sales support initiatives. Steve is responsible for all marketing operations at TruVest, including designing branding elements and developing marketing materials. As well, Steve evaluates TruVest’ s current & future initiatives through extensive market research and analysis.

Steve has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with a Marketing option, from Wilfrid Laurier University, School of Business and Economics.
